If Australia is part of your plan, PTE can be more than an English test for university admission. It is widely accepted by Australian universities and is recognised for Australian visa categories that require an approved English test.
Where PTE may fit
University admission
PTE Academic is widely accepted by Australian universities and by many institutions in other markets. The required overall score and any communicative skill minimums depend on the university course and intake.
Student visa applications
PTE Academic is on the Australian Department of Home Affairs list of recognised English tests. Always check the approved test version, the date of the result and the exact requirement for your visa application.
Post study and longer term plans
Some graduate work and skilled migration routes ask for evidence of English ability. PTE may be one accepted option, but the score and validity period must be checked against the policy in force when you apply.
Why students choose PTE
- Speaking, writing, reading and listening are completed in one sitting of roughly two hours
- Pearson says results are typically available in about two days, with a target of no more than five business days
- The test is fully computer based, with speaking recorded through a headset and writing entered on screen
- The 10 to 90 score scale makes it easier to turn skill gaps into a focused study plan
The format may suit people who are comfortable typing and prefer a computer to a face-to-face speaking interview. It still requires structured preparation and is not the best test for everyone.
What score is enough
The answer depends on the purpose. For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the general PTE Academic minimum for a Student visa is an overall score of 47. It may be 39 with at least 10 weeks of eligible ELICOS or a qualifying pathway program, and 31 with at least 20 weeks of eligible ELICOS.
The Temporary Graduate visa currently requires an overall score of 55, with minimum scores of 40 in listening, 42 in reading, 41 in writing and 39 in speaking. The result must also meet timing requirements, including being obtained within the 12 months before application.
For tests from 7 August 2025
Communicative skill minimums also apply
Universities, professional registration bodies and migration routes can set different standards. A score that worked for somebody else may have no connection to your own course or visa plan.
Who may prefer PTE
- Students building an Australian study plan with possible later English requirements
- Applicants working to a tight result deadline
- People who are more comfortable with a computer and headset than an in-person interview
- Confident typists with no major barrier to computer based testing
- Learners willing to train systematically around timing, task types and scoring
- Applicants who already know the course, visa or professional outcome they need
Clarity saves more time than another practice test
Before preparing, ask what the result is for, what score is required, and how far your current performance sits from that target. Once those answers are clear, a diagnostic assessment, study cycle and test date become much easier to plan.
