These figures come from different university pages and are not measured on one identical basis. Some include meals, utilities or furniture, while others cover only the room. They are useful starting points rather than a global price comparison.
University housing buys convenience
A university residence is not always the cheapest option. It may be close to classes, with furniture, utilities and internet already arranged. A student does not need to find a landlord, set up accounts or buy everything immediately, and it is usually easier to meet people.
For a first move overseas that convenience can matter more than saving a small amount each week. Popular residences fill early and contracts may cover a full semester or academic year with limited options to recover fees after leaving early.
Homestay can be a useful transition
Homestay can work well for younger students, short programs and people living away from family for the first time. If meals, utilities and internet are included, the total may be closer to a private share than the headline rent suggests.
It is still a family home rather than a hotel. Meal times, kitchen use, visitors, laundry and curfews may follow household expectations. Check the commute before accepting an arrangement.
Private sharing offers control with more responsibility
Sharing privately often lowers rent and gives more choice over location and housemates. Utilities, internet, furniture, bonds, transport and the way costs are split can quickly change both the real budget and the experience.
A student who does not yet understand the city, commute and rental rules should be cautious about signing a private 12-month lease immediately after landing.
Put weekly rent on the same timeline
Many overseas rentals are quoted weekly. A weekly rent of 300 is not 1,200 a month but closer to 1,300. Multiply a weekly figure by 4.33 for a simple monthly average.
